Prof. Dr. med. Claudio Pollo

✔ Specialist in Neurosurgery (FMH)
✔ Advanced Certification in Interventional Pain Therapy (SSIPM)
✔ Interdisciplinary Subspecialty in Spine Surgery
✔ Professor at the University of Bern

Prof. Dr. med. Claudio Pollo is an internationally renowned neurosurgeon with more than 30 years of experience.
He completed his medical studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, and his neurosurgical training at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) as well as at leading international university hospitals.

Since 2012, he has served as Deputy Head of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Bern (Inselspital), where he leads the programs in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, and pain surgery.

His clinical practice is dedicated to minimally invasive procedures (microsurgery, endoscopy, stereotactic/robotic techniques, brain and spinal cord stimulation) for spinal disorders and cerebral pathologies—particularly those associated with epileptic seizures (e.g., tumors, cavernomas, dysplasias, hippocampal sclerosis). In addition, he is recognized as an expert in the neurosurgical management of trigeminal neuralgia (microvascular decompression, balloon compression, radiosurgery) as well as hemifacial spasm.

His scientific work includes over 100 publications and several international patents in the field of neuromodulation. As a pioneer of deep brain stimulation using segmented electrodes, he was a finalist for the Swiss Medtech Award in 2020.

Prof. Pollo is actively engaged in research and teaching and has served as a member of several national and international neurosurgical societies.

PD Dr. med. Andreas Nowacki

✔ Specialist in Neurosurgery (FMH)
✔ Advanced Certification in Interventional Pain Therapy (SSIPM)
✔ Professor at the University of Bern

PD Dr. med. Andreas Nowacki is an internationally recognized neurosurgeon in the field of minimally invasive neurosurgery (stereotactic/robotic, endoscopic) as well as functional neurosurgery (brain and spinal cord stimulation).

After completing his medical studies at the University of Tübingen in 2013, he began his neurosurgical training in Bern, which he further enriched through fellowships at the Royal College of Surgeons in Oxford (United Kingdom) and the renowned Department of Neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

Since 2020, he has been Senior Consultant in Neurosurgery at the Inselspital, University Hospital Bern, where he co-directs the programs in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, and pain surgery.

In 2023, he obtained the Venia legendi and the title of Privatdozent in Neurosurgery at the University of Bern. His internationally award-winning research has been supported by numerous foundations and institutions, and he was selected for the prestigious “Rising Stars in DBS” program.

Clinically, his focus is on the minimally invasive treatment of neurological disorders, combining microsurgery with targeted modulation of neuronal networks.

His scientific work includes more than 50 publications in internationally renowned peer-reviewed journals.

Prof. Dr. med. Adrian Merlo

✔ Specialist in Neurosurgery (FMH)
✔ Interdisciplinary Subspecialty in Spine Surgery
✔ Professor emeritus at the University of Basel and

extraordinary professor emeritus of neuro-oncology

Prof. Adrian Merlo, MD, has 35 years of professional experience in neurosurgery. He completed his medical studies at the Universities of Fribourg and Zurich, his further training at the University Hospital of Basel under Prof. Otmar Gratzl, and has a broad research background in molecular biology and innovative treatment of brain tumors with numerous publications and various awards (see Wikipedia). Prof. Merlo was a senior physician for many years and served as interim chief physician at the University Hospital of Basel for two years. In collaboration with the EU, he developed the international project “Targeted Alpha Therapy for Malignant Glioma,” which is still active today. Since 2009, he has been running a private practice for neurosurgery in the center of Bern and has developed extensive expertise in spinal surgery as a further focus of his work, especially in complex spinal instrumentation.
