a) Microneurosurgical procedures using a tubular approach with the aid of the surgical microscope.
In this technique, access is achieved through a small (1–2 cm) skin incision, passing through the muscle to the affected site, while consistently preserving joints and ligament structures that are essential for spinal stability.

b) An endoscopic procedure in which a camera with an integrated working channel can be precisely introduced. Depending on the method, only one or at most two puncture incisions (less than 0.5 cm) are required to insert the camera.

In both techniques, special care is taken to preserve muscles, ligaments, and joints. As a result, patients experience little to no postoperative discomfort, and long-term spinal stability is maintained.

c) Anterior Cervical Microdiscectomy and Fusion / Artificial Disc Replacement (ACDF).
Anterior microdiscectomy with artificial disc implantation is a surgical procedure performed on the cervical spine. It is used for herniated discs or degenerative changes when nerves are compressed, causing pain or paralysis.

If spinal instability is present and causes significant symptoms for the patient, spinal fusion (spondylodesis) with instrumentation is required. In many cases, this can be performed minimally invasively using a percutaneous approach.

There are various surgical techniques (XLIF, ALIF, TLIF), which differ depending on the spinal region (cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine) and individual factors. We will be happy to advise you on which of these procedures is most suitable in your case.

 a) Neuronavigation / Stereotaxy / Robotics
These techniques make it possible to precisely localize a lesion and thereby reduce the size of the craniotomy (skull opening) and skin incision. They also allow continuous tracking of the neurosurgeon’s exact position during the removal of a lesion. This enables the surgeon to achieve the maximum possible resection of a brain or spinal tumor while ensuring the highest level of patient safety, or to place an electrode in the brain or around the spinal cord with millimeter accuracy. As a result, the risk of postoperative neurological complications is significantly reduced.
Stereotaxy and robotics also form the basis for laser ablation procedures (LITT) in the treatment of tumors and epileptic foci.

b) Neuromonitoring
This technology allows the functional integrity of neural pathways—such as those responsible for motor and sensory function—to be tested by electrical stimulation, even while the patient is asleep under anesthesia. In other words, it ensures that these pathways are not injured when surgery is performed in their vicinity. As described above, neuromonitoring also serves to optimize the resection of brain or spinal tumors or the millimeter-accurate placement of an electrode in the brain or spinal cord, while minimizing the risk of postoperative neurological complications.

c) Microsurgery
Thanks to the technological advancement of microsurgical instruments and operating microscopes, microsurgical techniques have developed fundamentally over the past decades. They allow neurosurgeons to operate with the highest degree of precision and safety.

d) Endoscopy
This technique, often used as a complement to the operating microscope, enables neurosurgeons to access regions of the brain that are otherwise difficult to visualize, using a camera with an integrated working channel (endoscope). It is employed, for example, in certain forms of hydrocephalus, in the resection of specific tumors, or in microvascular decompression for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. In some cases, this technique can also be beneficial in spinal surgery.

a) Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS):
In this treatment method, a thin wire—called an electrode—is inserted into the epidural space near your spinal cord through a needle under X-ray guidance. This space lies between the tough outer covering of the spinal cord and the vertebral bones. Once placed correctly, the electrode delivers electrical impulses to the spinal cord to block pain signals before they reach the brain.

In some cases, it may be beneficial to implant a plate electrode. This is larger and broader, allowing for wider pain coverage. Implantation requires a microsurgical procedure, in which part of the vertebral arch is removed and the electrode is placed under direct visualization by the surgeon.

b) Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS):
In this method, a thin wire (electrode) is inserted into the subcutaneous tissue using a needle under X-ray guidance. This treatment is particularly used at the back of the head for headache disorders (occipital nerve stimulation, ONS).

c) Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS):
Here, electrodes are implanted into deep brain structures to treat conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, tremor, certain pain syndromes, and depression.

d) Focused Ultrasound Therapy (MRgFUS):
MRI-guided focused ultrasound is a technique in which concentrated sound waves target specific brain areas without the need to open the skull. The MRI system guides and monitors the procedure, ensuring high precision and safety.
